About Richmond Java Users' Group

About

The Richmond Java User Group (RJUG) is for Java professionals in the Richmond, VA area.

We meet on the third Wednesday of each month, usually at 5000 Dominion Blvd, 23060, (Dominion Resources) in Innsbrook, Richmond's West End.

Our goal is to promote best practices for developers in the Richmond community who use the Java programming language by hosting speakers to discuss current trends in Java and software development practices.

How Events Work

RJUG meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of each month throughout the year.

General meetings are generally held at:

Dominion Innsbrook Technology Center
5000 Dominion Blvd
Glen Allen, Virginia 23060

Meeting Logistics

Meetings begin with a social half-hour from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. We open with general announcements and a brief overview of the evening's topic, receive a short commentary by our meeting sponsor and proceed with the speaker's presentation.

After the meeting everyone is welcome to adjourn to a local establishment to continue the discussion and meet the speaker one on one.  The after-meeting meetings always turn out enlightening discussions.

Speaker's lunch

From time to time we are able to honor the speaker with an informal lunch and in return get one-on-one look into their work and 'life in the limelight'.  All are welcome but it takes someone to get things rolling and usually there are plenty of competing alternatives.  If you'd like to propose a lunch with any of our speakers, please do so.  It's one of the few ways we can give back. If you're a speaker just say 'Hey how about lunch' and we'll get it done.  Always a pleasure.

Participation

All members are encouraged to participate fully in the RJUG; opportunities for participation include presenting at RJUG events, helping plan and run RJUG meetings and attend events.

Members are encouraged to actively recruit members of the community to join the RJUG and/or present at a RJUG meeting.  We welcome all suggestions for desired topics of interest and constructive feedback on our program.

Sponsorship

Sponsors provide the food and beverages for a given RJUG event. At 5:15 the sponsor is welcome to set up at a table provided at the entrance to the auditorium and greet the members as they enter. At 6 PM the sponsor is formally introduced and given five to ten minutes to address the audience. Many sponsors provide a door prize, such as a technical book, gift certificate up to $100, corporate schwag, or even an Ipod nano.  It's up to the sponsor.

Usual attendance is from 25-35 members. We communicate the RSVP count to sponsor as the meeting date approaches.

Please contact us if you're interested in sponsoring.

Steering Committee

The Richmond Java User Group welcomes all members to participate on the Steering Committee.  We strive to maintain a strong relationship with the local tech employers and consultant groups, for instance, AlterThought, Apex Systems, Inc, CapTech Ventures, Dominion Digital, Dominion Resources, Genworth Financial, Three Chopt Technology Solutions Group and Oracle all have been members on the committee and actively participate in running the group.

Steering Committee meetings are commonly held at 4:30 on the day of each scheduled meeting at the site of the general meeting or on the morning of the general meeting at the local Oracle office on Sadler Rd. or as needed.

Some off-cycle Steering Committee meetings may be held at:

Oracle Innsbrook Office
4870 Sadler Pl, Suite 101
Glen Allen, Virginia 23060

All members are invited to attend Steering Committee meetings.
